Final exams, final grades, graduation gowns, family, friends, and hearing my name called as I walk across the stage with a gleaming grin because I had done it! I graduated college – The American Dream. Most young adults in their early 20s complete their necessary course work, graduate, and then expect to find a job right out of college. Well, college might teach you what you need to know to work at your dream job…but does it teach you how to get that job? Nope. No it does not.
Interviewing is an art. I’m not great at it, but I found myself a pretty awesome job at a very amazing firm, so I must have learned something along the way. I’m here to give you a few basic pointers on how to nail that job interview. Whether you’re fresh out of college or decided to take a few years off, this should be some good information to keep in the back of your mind.
First things first. Research! The last thing you want is to have no idea what you’re walking into. You’re going to be asked why you want to work at the company, what qualities the firm has that most attracted you to the company, and probably what you can do for the company. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think those are basic questions. If you don’t research the company and don’t know what they do, who they are, what they stand for, and even basic knowledge of the people you are interviewing with, you’re going to ruin your chances. So go on the website, brush up on the company, and do your best.
Next up. Review common interview questions. You will be asked those typical questions. Who are you? What are your strengths/weaknesses? Why did you choose (accounting)? Why do you want to work for this company? What can you do for this company? Describe a situation where you were put on the spot. Describe a situation where you needed to take charge and become the leader. These are some common questions that you should be able to spit out an answer for.
I don’t even think I need to put this next point in here but I guess I should. Dress for success. Look nice and spiffy. Guys, this means suits and ties (yes even if it’s 100 degrees out — I promise you won’t melt). Ladies, put on a nice pants suit, a business professional dress or skirt, or even a very nice blouse and dress pants. Put a little effort into your appearance and it will go a long way. First impressions are the most important.
Lastly, I just want to throw out some other little tips. Arrive on time, watch your body language (no slouching or nail biting), be prepared (pen, paper, folder), be focused and confident, ask questions, and most important—be yourself.
Hopefully these little tips help you out. I’m no expert and my nerves usually get the best of me, but when I take a step back, take a breath and remember this information, it truly helps. Good luck!!
